The Cleveland Orchestra Story: "Second to None"

The Cleveland Orchestra Story: "Second to None" Review

They are, simply, the best at what they do.

The Cleveland Orchestra is one of the three greatest orchestras in the world--by the near-unanimous acclaim of audiences, critics, and musicians around the globe. What's more, they achieved this extraordinary success in a small Midwestern city, far from the traditional cultural centers of Europe and the U.S. east and west coasts. And they've stayed at the very top now for almost four decades.

This book tells how the Cleveland Orchestra rose amid the gritty surroundings of Big Industry to become a titan in the world of Big Art.

It's a story of indomitable founders like iron-willed impresario Adella Prentiss Hughes (the first woman to manage a symphony orchestra) and shrewd, wealthy patrons like industrialist John L. Severance. Of dedicated musicians and driven conductors--like colorful Artur Rodzinski (who packed a loaded pistol during every performance) and authoritarian genius George Szell, who drilled into his orchestra the awesome precision for which it is still renowned (and who even told his players how to dress and the cleaning ladies at Severance Hall what brand of toilet paper to stock).

It's also a story of many battles, for the orchestra has fought relentlessly to maintain its reputation for near-perfect performance.

How these musicians and maestros, managers and patrons rose repeatedly to meet the challenges--and in doing so set a standard for excellence rarely matched by any other arts organization--is the story of a true virtuoso performance.

In this book, the first about the Cleveland Orchestra in 30 years, and the first-ever independently published history of the subject, Donald Rosenberg recounts a complex, sweeping success story in very human terms, with a feel for its true drama and an eye for its telling details.

Bartók: Concerto for Orchestra (Cambridge Music Handbooks)

Bartók: Concerto for Orchestra (Cambridge Music Handbooks) Review

Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra has proven to be one of the most popularly successful concert works of the twentieth century. It is seen by its champions as an example of Bartók's seamless blend of Eastern European folk music and Western art music, and by its detractors as indicative of the composer's artistic compromise. This book contains a discussion of the historical and musical contexts of the piece, its early performance history and critical reception. It also includes the first complete movement-by-movement synopsis of the Concerto, as well as detailed technical information about the work.

Children's Corner - Orchestra Version

Children's Corner - Orchestra Version Review

This is a new, digitally enhanced reprint of the score originally published in 1911 by Durand et Cie., Paris. Originally composed in 1910 for piano solo, "Children's Corner" was scored for small orchestra the next year by Debussy's student and good friend Andre Caplet. This is the orchestral version most widely performed and recorded today. It is a brilliant example of early 20th century orchestral writing.

Gustav Mahler and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra Tour America

Gustav Mahler and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra Tour America Review

In 1909, when the troubled New York Philharmonic Orchestra needed a leader to rejuvenate and reshape it, composer and conductor Gustav Mahler accepted the challenge. By instituting regular rehearsals, developing a season with forty-six concerts—tripling the previous number, and taking the orchestra on tour, Mahler spent the final two years of his life striving to make the New York Philharmonic the best orchestra in the country, and equal of any in the world. Gustav Mahler and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra Tour America documents Mahler's tours with the orchestra during the 1909 and 1910 seasons, detailing the conditions and preparations for each tour, the outcome of each concert, and the perceptions of audiences beyond New York City. Author Mary H. Wagner amassed data from more than 1,000 articles to present a thorough description of the planning and reception of the Philharmonic on its first tour outside New York. Starting with Mahler's decision to join the Philharmonic, the book describes the ways Mahler designed programs to appeal to American audiences, employing one hundred musicians on the tours and presenting works by Wagner, Strauss, Berlioz, and Bach to audiences, many of whom had never heard them played by a full romantic orchestra. The book also describes the touring conditions throughout America, providing a history of touring and orchestral development at the turn of the twentieth century.
