Roy Harris: A Bio-Bibliography (Bio-Bibliographies in Music)

Roy Harris: A Bio-Bibliography (Bio-Bibliographies in Music) Review

A seminal figure in the development of distinctively American concert music, Roy Harris created a large body of compositions in virtually all media in a career spanning more than fifty years, from the 1920s to the 1970s. His fortunes fluctuated widely with the public and critical community. Eclipsed during the 1960s, when his conservative idiom with its strong nationalistic stance was out of vogue, he and his work have gained increased scholarly, performance, and recording interest in recent decades, which have brought to the fore an entire generation of neglected American composers. Documenting and organizing Harris's complex oeuvre is the essential concern of the present book, and the catalogue of works and performances provides information on instrumentation, premieres, publication, and special aspects of each composition. Like the catalog, the discography is the most thorough ever assembled for Harris, and it also includes commentary on features of the recordings. The extensive annotated bibliography includes reference sources, scholarly works, general works, text sources, folksong sources, writings by Harris, and critical reviews. Works, recordings, and bibliography are carefully enumerated, cross-referenced, and indexed. An opening study of Harris's life, works, and style incorporates gleanings from an oral history collection recently made available. This research tool is an essential companion to any critical study of Harris and will provide a firm base on which future such studies can be developed.

Musical Metropolis: Los Angeles and the Creation of a Music Culture, 1880-1940

Musical Metropolis: Los Angeles and the Creation of a Music Culture, 1880-1940 Review

This fascinating cultural history of music in Los Angeles focuses on orchestral performance from the late nineteenth century through World War II. Decentralization defined Los Angeles's growth since the late nineteenth century, and because the central city did not dominate the city's music culture as was the case in cities of the East and Midwest, a greater diversification of music emerged. Performers and audiences included Latinos, Euro-Americans, Asian Americans, and African Americans, but the notion of diversity in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century city went well beyond ethnicity--it also included a "media diversity," as the city's musical output was presented through a variety of channels including recordings, radio, and film. These media strongly influenced the musical culture of Los Angeles, which in turn influenced the musical culture of America at large as the city grew into the nation's epicenter of entertainment. The book features a CD providing examples of much of the music examined. In addition, there are further support materials on the author's website: http://faculty.ulv.edu/~marcusk

The Music of Billy May: A Discography (Discographies)

The Music of Billy May: A Discography (Discographies) Review

Billy May was a self-taught musician and arranger. In 1938, he received his first big break arranging and playing trumpet; first, for the Charlie Barnet band, and in 1940, the band of Glenn Miller. Settling in Hollywood in 1943, his first of many big breaks in radio was playing in Ozzie Nelson's band for the Red Skelton Show. Shortly thereafter, May was asked by Nelson to be musical director to his new show, "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet." He was also fortunate to play in the orchestra and write arrangements for John Scott Trotter on Bing Crosby's Kraft Music Hall. Billy May's earliest collaboration with Frank Sinatra produced Don't Fence Me In for broadcast on December 23, 1944. Capitol Records paired Billy May and Alan Livingston to initiate a series of children's recordings with arrangements and compositions such as Bozo the Clown and the exceedingly popular I Taut I Taw a Putty Tat. As a band leader and arranger, his signature included the prominent saxophone section glissando (sliding, or "slurping") effect, and highly imaginative arrangements. His last great project was the documentation on record of swing era music, commissioned by Time-Life, and completed in 1973. The discography covers Billy May as arranger and composer from 1944-1998, as sideman and arranger for others, his work on radio, television, movies, and international appearances, his road band, recordings, both domestic and foreign, and his transcriptions. Data is cross-indexed by song title and artist.

Philadelphia's History of Music: Classical-Opera-Pop Music-Jazz--Rock N'Roll

Philadelphia's History of Music: Classical-Opera-Pop Music-Jazz--Rock N'Roll Review

I have made a complete search of all books on the subject of the history of Philadelphia music as complete as I have written and found NONE.Covering the following subjects- Classical-Opera-Jazz-Pop-Rock N'Roll and The Yiddish Musical Theaters- Bio's of Singers-Musicians-Song Writers-Disc Jockeys Theaters-Night Clubs-Ballrooms-Summer Stock. The city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is home to a vibrant and well-documented musical heritage, stretching back to colonial times. Innovations in classical music, opera, popular, swing, R&B, jazz and soul have earned the music of Philadelphia national and international renown. Philadelphia's musical institutions have long played an important role in the music of Pennsylvania, as well as a nationwide impact, especially in the early development of pop music. Philadelphia's diverse population has also given it a reputation for styles ranging from dancehall to Irish and Italian traditional music, Jewish music as well as a thriving classical music scene. The city has played an equally prominent role in developing popular music. In the Golden Age of Music 1940' 50's and the early years of rock and roll, a number of South Philadelphia-born popular vocalists made Philadelphia and popular music virtually synonymous, including Eddie Fisher, Lillian Roth, Kitty Kallen, Al Martino, Mario Lanza, Jeanette MacDonald, The Four Aces, of Pop music and to rock artists of Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, Gogi Grant and Bobby Rydell. This led to the airing of the popular dance show of Bob Horn's Bandstand, from Philadelphia, hosted by Bob Horn on WFIL TV Channel 6 studios at 46th and Market Streets at the time, where teenagers would descend in droves after school to be televised dancing to the latest hits on the pop charts in front of a very large Philadelphia TV audience. Bandstand biggest hit "The Bunny Hop" dance created by Harvey Sheldon and Dimples in 1952. Harvey Sheldon became Philly's First TV Teenage Idol

Pavane pour une Infante défunte - Orchestra version: Study score

Pavane pour une Infante défunte - Orchestra version: Study score Review

Ravel composed the original piano version of this piece in 1899 after resuming his studies at the Paris Conservatory. It was published the next year and became an overnight success. Despite some self-criticism of his youthful work for being "poor in form", Ravel thought well enough of it to prepare an orchestral version in late 1910, which was given its premiere under the baton of Henry Wood at the Manchester Gentlemen's Concerts on 27 February 1911. This newly-engraved critical edition will be appreciated by Ravel fans, students, and conductors everywhere.

Black Music in Britain: Essays on the Afro-Asian Contribution to Popular Music (Popular Music in Britain)

Black Music in Britain: Essays on the Afro-Asian Contribution to Popular Music (Popular Music in Britain) Review

What is "black music"? Do all musicians play it? Can whites play "black music"? These are difficult yet fundamental questions which Paul Oliver addresses at length in this volume, which places the contribution of black musicians to popular music in its socio-historical contexts. Part 1 concentrates upon the background from 1800-1950 including 19th-century attitudes to "black music", the first encounters with jazz, and the introduction of West-Indian calypsos. Part 2 considers the 1950s to the present, examining music by Africans in Britain, the influence of steelband music, and the popularity of "bhangra" dance music among young Asians, and the maintainance of the "gawwali" tradition. Several contributors have written chapters which aim to define and clarify this variety of types and styles. They consider educational, sociological and historical perspectives, as well as examining the responses of the media and the recording industry to black music.
